Being an undeclared major and looking at the kind of work and such my mom does, I am thinking about going into the field of marketing as well. She clearly isn’t a professor but she is required to write and do reports daily. She is a very smart woman who graduated college and then went of to get her masters degree in business. I recently called my mom and interviewed her on these questions about writing. After talking to her and truly understanding everything she does on a normal day at work made me realize that I should really consider declaring my major to marketing/business.
Not knowing much about this major, I was surprised to hear some of the answers I received from her. Talking about her writing, she told me that she mainly does reports for her job and handles all the paper work stuff, which requires her do some form of writing every day.
On an average day my mom writes numerous emails to other companies about the products they make, she emails other people in her department so they can set up places and times for meetings, and she also fills out reports to be sent out and viewed by other people. The purpose for her writing is to benefit herself, her co-workers and other companies as well. Her writing is required in her field because it helps her company become more known and give it a good reputation. Being in the pharmaceutical area of business, she makes products and writes about them in a good way to others, which benefits people everywhere.
The audience that she writes to is people who are looking into buying the product they are making. She also writes to other workers in which she emails to get them to familiar with the things that are going on as well. In this field, my mother gets both enjoyment and anger out of writing. She loves her job to death and what she does because in the end she is helping people and her company become better, yet there are nights where she stays up past midnight emailing people constantly and sending out reports so she doesn’t fall behind on what she has to do. I can tell from talking to her that this is a very interesting and fun job to do, and if you also don’t have that much of a problem with having to write everyday. One of the pharmaceutical marketing research articles that she admires is the Annal of Internal Medicine. She admires this article because it talks about important things that have to do with what she does. After looking at the article myself, I can see why she likes it because it explains a lot of things about the field and if you are interested in it, it will help you get a better understanding of it.
Overall listening to what my mother had to say about this field, it made me realize that there is a lot of writing that she has to do everyday, but if you love what you do and are writing about, it really isn’t that bad. Its not like she is sitting there writing essays all day, she is writing emails and such which is definitely not the end of the world because it could be so much worse. Hearing what she has to stay has given me a better understanding and has helped me decide that becoming a major in her field is what I would now like to do.
